In 2020, Glendale did a study, liked here, to establish what and where we should focus our efforts to improve pedestrian and cyclist routes. Green Tree Road was one of those locations. The study suggested we add on-street bicycle accommodations and a sidewalk on one side of the road.

Green Tree Road is not wide enough to keep parking and add a bike lane, so last spring we added sharrow markings to indicate it as a bike route, and striped a parking lane to help calm traffic.

Engineering constraints are the primary factor in location as obstacles can add greatly to the cost. Our engineering firm has suggested the sidewalk be placed on the north side of the road from Neil to Glen Shore then cross there to the south extending to Range Line. The detailed engineering survey includes what residents have inadvertently placed on City property which could be impacted by the work. The plans try to work around them as much as possible. I am reaching out to each resident that adjacent to sidewalk for feedback.

Our first priority is to connect Neil to North Crestwood, followed by North Crestwood to Range Line, then finally Range Line to the Oak Leaf Trail. We are estimating each segment independently.

Similar engineering work is being done in a variety of other places in Glendale to help connect gaps in our pedestrian routes and build new routes as outlined in our Bike and Pedestrian Plan. Ultimately, the Council jointly needs to decide where the funding is used.

Below are some frequently asked questions about sidewalks in Glendale.

Construction and repairs to sidewalk

The City’s policy is to not special levy the cost of construction or repairs to the residents adjacent to sidewalk. We have sidewalk maintenance as part of our capital improvement budget. Engineering is involved in the selection of where our sidewalks are placed to avoid the need for repairs due to tree roots, etc. in the future. You should not be liable due to injuries from sidewalk maintenance as it is on City property (though I am not an attorney).
